Identifying aspen firewood
by Steve

I took this tree down about 3 weeks ago and cant figure out what kind it is? It was a large tree straight and true for at least 40-50 feet before branching off. Any help on figuring out this for me would be great as I plan to use it as heating wood this winter.
Answer
Steve,
Although I can't be 100 percent sure without seeing the tree in person, the log looks like aspen. Aspen (Populus) is a hardwood but a relatively soft one. It is a below average firewood species, but like most wood, it will burn fine when properly seasoned. Its heating value is similar to pine. I wouldn't use it exclusively to heat your home in the winter, but it's fine to mix with other superior species.
I hope this help!
