Wood Permit for Firewood

by Jack
(Coarsegold, CA)

During as recent storm that caused many trees to fall, I was cutting a pine on the side of the road on a main highway close to town. I had loaded my truck and a CHP stopped and asked me for my tags. I was not aware I needed tags for that area and offered to unload the wood if he would not give me a ticket. Do I need tags in a situation like this?

Answer

Jack,

It varies upon your location and what government agency manages the land. It's always best to find out who owns the land and then contact that agency. Some places it is okay without a permit, whereas some agencies require a permit but it's free. Other agencies will actually charge you a fee. So it really depends.

It's best to do your due diligence before you start cutting to save yourself a headache in the end.

Good luck!
